On the set of “Bei Ping Xiao Jie”

Sunday and monday, I had an opportunity to be an extra on a movie being made in Wuxi.  The film will be called "Bei Ping Xiao Jie".  It is a made for tv movie that will be released in March.  It is the story of three women in China in the 1930s.  The scene in which I got to take part is set in a Beijing night club in the 1930s.  The makers of the movie chose the Roman Holiday Inn in Wuxi to shot the scene in.  The Roman Holiday Inn’s facade is familiar to anyone who takes the train into Wuxi.  About a minute before you arrive at the station, you will see this building with classical-style columns and two large statues of topless winged women.  It has till this weekend, for me served as a sign that my train journey is about to end.  Now , I know the Inn is a spa designed around Roman architecture and  themes from the movie Roman Holiday starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.  The interior is quite will done.  There are winding staircases,  plush carpets, old furniture, large colourful murals, and pictures from the movie.  I have been told it is a nice place to go for a massage and have a swim.

Being an extra meant I got to be dressed up in some tuxedoes, do some dancing, sit at a table in the background, run from a gun shot, and stand around for interminable times socializing or sleeping.  The other foreign extras on the set had been bussed in from Shanghai.  I meet people from New York City, Belarus, Columbia, Germany, and France up to all sorts of ventures in China.  I took a picture with one of the main actors in the scene thinking that the students would recognize him.  It turned out they did.  The man who I am posing with below is a tv star famous for playing emperors.
